Do stud finders work through tile?

Some do, some don’t — and the split is clean physics, not brand quality. Ceramic and porcelain tile don’t block magnetic fields. So a rare-earth magnet and a magnetometer-based phone app both work through tile: they still feel the steel screws that fasten the wall to each stud. How to find studs behind tile with a magnet or phone

The technique is the same as on drywall, with one adjustment: everything is weaker, so go slower.

  1. Sweep at a crawl. Hold the phone or magnet flat against the tile and move it horizontally a few inches per second. The screw heads are now 3/8″–1/2″ farther from the sensor than on bare drywall, so a fast pass can slide right over the spike. A stud finder app for iPhone shows the magnetic reading live, which helps you notice the smaller bump.
  2. Chase the fastener column. One hit could be a stray screw. Confirm by finding a second hit 12″–16″ directly above or below it — screws in a stud line up vertically.
  3. Step 16 inches sideways. Most US framing is on 16″ centers. Once one stud is confirmed, the neighbors should land a tape-measure step away. Confirm each with the magnet or app rather than trusting the math alone.
  4. Mark on painter’s tape. Pencil doesn’t erase off glazed tile cleanly. Run a strip of tape and mark the stud centers on that.

One thing a stud finder on a tile wall may pick up that drywall doesn’t have: the backer board fasteners. Cement board is screwed off on a denser pattern — typically every 8″ or so across the field, not just at studs on 16″ centers. Most of those screws still land in studs, but if your hits seem too frequent or don’t line up vertically, you may be reading field fasteners into the backer board’s seams or edges. The vertical-line check is what separates a real stud from noise.

The transfer trick: find the studs where there’s no tile

The most reliable way to find studs behind tile doesn’t involve scanning tile at all. Studs run continuously from floor plate to top plate — so find them where the wall is plain painted drywall, then carry the line across the tiled zone.

  • Scan above the tile. Most bathroom and kitchen tile stops partway up the wall — above a backsplash, above a wainscot, above the shower surround. Scan the bare drywall up there, where any stud finder works normally.
  • Or scan below. Backsplashes have plain wall underneath the counter line inside cabinets; tub surrounds often have painted wall beside them on the same plane.
  • Mark two points per stud on the untiled section, a foot or two apart vertically, so you have a direction, not just a dot.
  • Transfer with a level. Hold a spirit level plumb through your two marks and extend the line onto painter’s tape across the tile. Where the plumb line crosses your mount height is the stud center.

This is the move that saves you when the scan through the tile is ambiguous — and on old, thick tile walls it’s sometimes the only move that works. It costs five extra minutes and a strip of tape.

Mounting on tile: grab bars, shelves, and towel bars

Bathrooms and kitchens are where this question actually comes up, and the stakes differ wildly by fixture.

  • Grab bars are non-negotiable. A grab bar must anchor into studs or into solid wood blocking installed behind the wall — it has to catch a person’s full falling weight, instantly. Tile anchors alone are not an option, whatever the anchor package claims. If no stud or blocking lands where the bar needs to go, move the bar or open the wall and add blocking. This is the one fixture where “close enough” fails someone at the worst possible moment.
  • Floating shelves want studs too. A loaded shelf is a lever pulling its top fasteners straight out of the wall. On tile over backer board, hit studs.
  • Towel bars and hooks are forgiving. Light, mostly-downward loads can ride on quality anchors in the tile and backer board if no stud is available — cement board holds screws far better than drywall does. But if a stud is within reach of the bar’s mounting holes, use it; a towel bar gets yanked more than you’d think.

Before you drill: what’s behind bathroom tile

Two cautions before any bit touches the wall.

First, what’s in the cavity. Bathrooms and kitchens are exactly where supply lines, drain vents, and wiring run — the tiled wall behind a faucet or beside a shower valve is the most pipe-dense wall in the house. Finding the stud is only half the check; run through is it safe to drill into this wall before you commit, especially anywhere near the fixtures.

Second, the tile itself. Glazed tile cracks if you attack it like drywall. Use a carbide or diamond tile bit, start slow on a piece of painter’s tape so the bit doesn’t skate, and keep the drill in rotation-only mode — hammer mode shatters tile. Drill through the tile first, then switch to a regular bit for the backer board and stud behind it.

The honest limit: thick mud-set walls

On most tile walls built in the last few decades — tile on thinset on cement board — the magnet and the magnetometer app work. Where they start to fail is older construction: mud-set tile, common in mid-century bathrooms, sits on a thick bed of mortar over metal lath. That buildup can put the stud fasteners well over an inch behind the surface, and the steel lath itself smears the magnetic picture. If your magnet feels nothing anywhere, or the app reads noise across the whole wall, you’re probably on a mud-set wall.
